Disaster Relief Committee Fundraising Campaign Begins
Posted: April 07, 2015
The City's Disaster Relief Fundraising campaign was launched today on the steps of City Hall with a cheque for $5,000 presented by the Insurance Bureau of Canada (IBC). The City of Belleville recently received provincial funding approval to provide financial assistance to those who suffered property damage and loss during the 2014 flood along the Moira River in the Corbyville and Foxboro areas. In accordance with the program, the City of Belleville has formed a Disaster Relief Committee. The committee will fundraise and administer the provincial Ontario Disaster Relief Assistance Program (ODRAP) that provides emergency financial assistance to municipalities, individuals, small businesses, farmers and non-profit organizations to assist them financially after a natural disaster. The province, through the program, has agreed to contribute up to a maximum of $2 for every dollar raised by the local committee.
Citizen committee members, Mike Letwin (Chair), Karen Baker (Vice-Chair) and Joy Martin, were appointed by City Council. These members were not impacted by the flooding and bring varied backgrounds and expertise to the group.
