City Celebrates and Front Street Reopens
Posted: October 19, 2018
Last night, October 18, 2018, a ribbon cutting ceremony in downtown Belleville marked the completion and re-opening of Front Street to traffic in downtown Belleville. The construction is part of the four year revitalization and redevelopment of the City’s downtown core. The street celebration was held to thank the downtown community for their support and perseverance during this project.
“I would like to sincerely thank our downtown stakeholders for all they have endured over the past four years,” said Mayor Taso Christopher. “The City would also like to acknowledge Len Corcoran Excavating and their team. They have made extra efforts in maintaining business continuity and access during this complex construction project and have worked with us every step of the way.”
A crowd of businesses, property owners, residents, patrons and project team members gathered on Front Street for the celebration. The evening kicked-off with music by the Fiddleheads, food and drinks provided by downtown restaurants, and displays showcasing before and after photos of the downtown, façade improvements, new businesses in the downtown and the influx of residential development that is underway as a result of this project. Members of the Mayor’s Task Force team, the BDIA, consulting teams and Corcoran Excavating were recognized prior to the ribbon cutting.
Belleville’s revitalized downtown now features upgrades to the underground infrastructure (new watermain, new or relined sanitary sewers and new utilities); reconstructed roads, boulevards, and sidewalks, including new asphalt, concrete and brick pavers; and new design elements including street lights and traffic signals, street furniture, granite-curb planters and trees.
Front Street is now open to two-way traffic. The Contractor will continue to have a presence in downtown Belleville to finish minor work and site clean-up. Market Street remains closed as construction is completed. During this time shoppers and visitors will be able to access and enjoy all that our revitalized downtown has to offer during the holiday season.
