“We are delighted to welcome Dr. Mahesh Mendis to Quinte Health and to our emergency department team at Belleville General Hospital,” said Dr. Colin MacPherson, Quinte Health Chief of Staff. “Emergency medicine is a demanding and vital field, and Dr. Mendis brings with him a deep commitment to timely, compassionate, and skilled care. His decision to join our team speaks to the strength of this community and our shared dedication to creating healthier communities together. We are deeply grateful to the City of Belleville for their continued leadership and partnership in addressing the complex challenges of physician recruitment. When we work together in service of care, we can make a meaningful difference in people’s lives.”
“I am truly honoured to join the Belleville emergency department team,” said Dr. Mahesh Mendis. “Dr. Ken Collins and the entire group of physicians have been incredibly welcoming and supportive. A special thank you to Martha Farrell for her guidance throughout my recruitment process—your support has meant a great deal. I’m thrilled to become part of such a wonderful community and look forward to beginning this new chapter in the beautiful city of Belleville. Every community has its unique challenges, and I am committed to serving the people of Belleville with dedication, compassion and my fullest effort.”
Although healthcare and physician recruitment are not a municipal responsibility, the City of Belleville has recognized the need and implemented one of the most successful physician recruitment programs in the province, recruiting more than 50 physicians and eight nurse practitioners. The program is funded by the dividends the City receives as a shareholder of Elexicon Energy and to date, over $8 million has been committed to attracting primary healthcare providers. The City has recognized the importance of, and the challenges with, attracting much needed specialists to the area and has been working closely with Quinte Health to attract the skills needed by local residents.
For residents in need of a family physician or a nurse practitioner, it is important to register with Health Care Connect (HCC). HCC is a resource used by physicians and government agencies to place patients with physicians and can be relied upon by doctors and nurse practitioners when developing or expanding their roster of patients. Registering with HCC is the key to finding primary health care in Ontario. You can register with HCC by calling 1-800-445-1822 (TTY 1-800-387-5559) or by visiting the HCC website.
