We're here to help you with your next building project! Whether it's a new structure or a renovation, for your home or business, we have some helpful information to get you started.
Building permits
There are several municipal by-laws and Ontario Building Code requirements for your renovation and construction projects. Make sure you have the proper building permits when starting projects like demolitions, residential constructions/additions/renovations, swimming pools, septic systems, signs, and much more.
Right-of-way and your front yard
The Right-of-Way (ROW) is the city-owned strip of land from the edge of the street shoulder, curb, or sidewalk onto your property, typically 3 to 10 feet. This portion of land is the landowner's responsibility, but the city has the right to determine what takes place there. This allows us to build and maintain the street, curb and gutter, storm sewers and underground utilities. We also maintain the trees within the right of way. Some areas in the ROW are sensitive to heavy vehicles and digging. It's important that you obtain the required road permits prior to working in the ROW.
Call before you dig
If you're planning any project that requires you to dig, you must contact Ontario One Call at least 5 days before. Ontario One Call will notify buried infrastructure owners that you plan to dig. Reps from each underground buried infrastructure owner will come out to mark the location of buried underground lines and cables on your property so you can dig safely.
