Core Values:
Professionalism, The fire department demands the highest standards of excellence, integrity, commitment, and dedication from all its employees. As professionals, we must treat all others with respect and dignity. The public and taxpayers deserve nothing less.
Accountability, in carrying out our mission, all employees must hold themselves accountable to the public, taxpayers and personally for their actions.
Integrity, The fire department is entrusted with protecting the public and enforcing fire and other related codes, each member has a personal responsibility to demonstrate the highest ethical standards to inspire confidence and trust in each other and also in the public we serve.
History
On May 18, 1840 the Police Board resolved that there be formed in the town of Belleville, a Volunteer Fire establishment consisting of an Engine Company and a Hook and Ladder Company.
Belleville purchased its first Steam Fire engine, a Button Steam engine from Waterford New York in 1866. In October of that year, the town board decided to purchase the Gore building near the upper bridge to house the Steam Fire Engine.
On January 3, 1874, Belleville purchased a second Steam Fire Engine, manufactured by Merryweather.
The Belleville Volunteer Fire Department was formed on May 27, 1878 and continues to operate today in our Rural areas.
On January 1, 1916, Belleville Fire Department became an all career department consisting of 10 Firefighters working an 84 hour week on 24 hour rotating shifts.
Communications
Belleville Fire and Emergency Service Communications Branch has been in the business of providing a professional level of fire communications services since the 1960’s and has committed to including Communications Services as a primary mandate of the Belleville Fire and Emergency Service.
The Communications division of the Belleville Fire and Emergency Service (BFES) receives and processes requests for assistance. Relevant call data is received and the appropriate Fire Department is dispatched. Our communications division dispatches all 17 Municipal Fire Services in Hastings County. Over 2900 emergencies were dispatched in 2019. We are responsible for dispatching fire services for over 145,000 residents of Hastings County.
Fire Stations and Apparatus
Belleville is home to two Career and three Volunteer Fire Stations. Each Station has multiple Fire Apparatus and crews ready to respond to a variety of incidents and emergencies.
