What You Can Expect
Flushing stirs up sediment in water pipes which may cause your water to temporarily change colour. If you notice reddish-coloured water, run your cold water tap until the water runs clear. It's best to avoid doing laundry while the program is underway in your area to prevent your clothes from becoming stained.
Why We Flush Hydrants
The Ontario Fire Code (O. Reg. 730/81) states that each hydrant must be flushed and inspected annually. Flushing removes sediment from water mains which helps to keep drinking water clear in our distribution system. Flushing and inspection also helps to maintain proper operating pressure for fighting fires to keep our community safe.
Using Water Wisely
The hydrant flushing program takes place in the summer when demand on Belleville's water supply is highest. On a hot summer day, Belleville's water consumption can often double. While hydrant flushing may appear to use a considerable amount of water, it is actually very little when compared to the amount of water used for irrigating lawns in our community.
Help us avoid summer water shortages by using water wisely. We monitor water demand daily and will suspend hydrant flushing if needed but we urge residents to do their part by practicing water conservation.
